Chaitra Shukla Pratipada is known as the Gudi Padwa in Sanskrit that means the bright phase of the moon. The Gudi Padwa Celebrations take place on the first day of the Chaitra month that marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year according to the lunisolar Hindu calendar. Being a Maharashtrian festival, the Gudi Padwa Celebrations take place all over India with different names. For example, it is called as Samvatsar Padvo by the Hindu Konkanis of Goa and Kerala, Yugadi among the rest of Konkani Diaspora in Karnataka, Ugadi in Andhra Pradesh and Navreh or Navreh by the Kashmiri Pandits.
Gudi Padwa Celebrations in India
There are a number of stories related to the celebrations of the Hindu festival Gudi Padwa. One of the stories suggests that the Gudi Padwa Celebrations in India are done as a mark of the victory of the veteran Maratha leader, Shivaji Maharaja. His kingdom spread across the entire part of western India and in his honor the festival began to be celebrated. And that is why people celebrate this festival by worshipping a cloth which flies like a flag known as the Gudi that is usually taken as the sign of victory in an army.
Gudi Padwa Celebrations also take place as being the harvest festival. It symbolizes the end of the cultivation of the Rabi crop for the season. The festival is also the season of ripening of mango fruit. The Gudi Padwa marks the beginning of the sale of mangoes in the market.
Another tale related to this festival suggests that on this day universe was created. Indian Hindus believe that on this day Lord Brahma created the universe. And hence, the festival is dedicated to all the Gods who are worshipped in India. It is believed that Lord Brahma took the incarnation of Matsya or fish on this day to save the earth from pralaya or destruction.
In the modern era, the festival is a much awaited one. On this day, worshipping of Hindu Gods takes place and there are prayers that are done for the well being of people. It is a very common belief that good wins over bad and hence, is an auspicious day.
