History of the Celebrations of National Beer Day
We will have to back to 1919 to know about the History of National Beer Day. It was January 16, 1919, when an 18th Amendment to the Constitution was passed by the Congress that had banned the making, transportation and sale of alcohol all around. This was the hard time when Americans had to find illicit and underground ways to drink their favorite beverage ‘beer’. After a decade, United States had to face one of the worst economic depressions.
When in 1933, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt took the office, he saw people were not very happy with the experiment of banning alcohol and that is was in fact, halting the production and sale of alcoholic beverages, which resulted in a major job and revenue loss and decided to repeal the 18th Amendment. On March 22, 1933, President Roosevelt signed the Cullen-Harrison Act that amended the prevailing Volstead Act of 1919 to allow the consumption and sale of low-alcohol beer and wine in public.
The Cullen-Harrison Act came into effect on April 7, 1933 and since then, 7th April began to be celebrated as the National Beer Day. At 12:01 a.m. on April 7, 1933, Americans took to the streets to show their happiness and excitement to have been allowed to drink beer in public again.
Beer is actually an amazing thing to have and it feels great to have a day that is especially dedicated to this wonderful thing. Cheers!
