People residing in the Indian Deccan region celebrate their New Year month of Chaitra called as the Ugadi marking the first day of the New Year. There is no specific day on which Ugadi is celebrated because of the lunisolar Hindu calendar. ‘Ugadi’ is a Sanskrit word that means the beginning of the new age. It is believed that on this day, Lord Brahma began the creation of earth. The Ugadi Celebrations in India are generally observed in the month of either March or April. All the family members gather and pray to the almighty to seek blessings as a part of the Ugadi Celebrations in India. Like other occasions, the festival of Ugadi is also incomplete without traditional cuisines. Special food items are prepared and eaten by the people to mark the Ugadi Celebrations in India. Floors are splashed with fresh cow dung and floral designs are also drawn on the floors.
There are many traditions and rituals related to the festival of Ugadi. People watch their reflections in a bowl of molten ghee. People wear new clothes on the day and elder women of the family apply kumkum on the foreheads of the other family members after performing aarti. Neem, mango and tamarind flowers are also offered to Gods. People also eat neem, mango, tamarind and jiggery ground together to mark acceptance of the happy and bad times of life’s journey.
